TRIPTYCH
- Oil on Canvas 4 m 40 X 1 m 20 - conceived from 1979 to 1983, realized
from
1983 to 1985. The painting is composed starting from portraits or elements
of portraits
of Artists (270 on the whole) according to the principle of the double
image: in the faces
of Picasso, Mozart, Beethoven and of many others, I interpreted the sets
of shades and of
lights to draw some characters and various scenes. It was then necessary
to structure these
elements in logical sets. The three general topics: Fall of the rebellious
Angels, Tower of Babel
and Tentation of St Anthony were not premeditated, but appeared in the
course of design or
of realization. During the four years of preparation, the project comprised
SEVEN square panels,
whose only the two extremes survived: for reasons as much practise that
financial, I had to
convince myself, not without difficulties, to condense the five other
panels in the central one.
A great number of portraits in double images, scenes and characters thus
disappeared from
the final result, which caused positive results of densifiyng the middle
of the table and to confer
a general prospect to it, a well to get the global picture more accessible.
The decorations and
architectures were conceived progressively, according to the needs for
the subjects: thus the
presence of the tower appeared only tardily. One can as well notice that
the extreme edges on
the right and on the left can be joined, and that thus the image, in the
horizontal direction
neither beginning has, nor end.
